Recognize and secure a hacked Yahoo Mail account

Keeping your account safe is important to us. If you think someone is trying to hack or take over your account, there are some important steps you need to take to secure your information. Know the warning signs and what to do if your account's been compromised.

Signs of a hacked account

Review your Yahoo Mail settings

Hackers will change settings in your Yahoo Mail account to disrupt your inbox or get copies of your emails. Access your mail settings and make sure none of your info or preferences were changed without your knowledge. Things to look for include:

  • Sending name
  • Email filters
  • Email signature
  • Vacation response
  • Blocked addresses
  • Reply-to address
  • Auto-forwarding address
  • Default sending address

When in doubt, secure your account

Even if you're unsure the account's been compromised, we always recommend securing your Yahoo account.
